Severe Minnesota Allergens
When I was thirteen years old, my family relocated and moved from Arizona to Minnesota. As I had been living in Arizona for the past ten years of my life, I was acclimated only to Arizona allergens. My family moved in the spring time, one of the worst times of the year for Minnesota allergens. I knew my allergies would act up but I figured I would suffer through it and be fine until I got used to it.
However, when my sister and I were exploring outside one of the first days at our new home, I had a horrible allergy attack. It started mildly, with the general sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. But soon I could not stop sneezing and my eyes itched so much I had to immediately take cover indoors. My nose tickled non-stop, paired with continuous sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. It was caused by pollen from the field in which we were playing and I was naive to how severe the consequences to exposing myself to the allergens were. As soon as I came inside, my mom helped me with eye drops, tissue, and some over-the-counter allergy medicine.
It didn’t take long for us to realize how this attack occurred, and for the remainder of that summer I stayed away from the pollen-filled field. Although I did not need medical assistance, it was nonetheless a miserable time that I never want to go through again. Even inside the house was not a safe haven, as we often left our windows open and had no air filtration systems besides central air.
